Saturday 19th May

Hornsea Sailing Club

On our journey to Hornsea, I kept telling my crew (and quietly reassuring myself) that by the time we arrived, the westerly winds would abate and we would have a great sailing day. On our arrival six other visitors plus a local boat had the same idea, but ominously their boats were still well secured to the trailers and the owners inside the clubhouse (one crew refusing to come out of the car!)

At briefing, a force six plus was reported and discussed with the decision to postpone to 1200 hours. At approximately 1200 still the same wind strength without any indication of any reduction. A second discussion and unfortunately, a vote to cancel. Now everyone knows that after you cancel an event the laws of reverse action take place. The winds drop to a sailable level and you feel the need to apply hindsight. Unfortunately when this happened some boats had left so the decision had been made despite the efforts of Steve the O.D. to get us on the water.

However, fear not Miracle sailors, when the wind had reduced slightly, up stepped the crew of 3131 from North Lincs Sailing Club to prove the rest of us were wimps, I believe they had a great sail and proceeded up and down the Mere at their leisure.

Hornsea is a fantastic stretch of water, well worth a visit if we are invited again. It would be good for a two day event if we can sort out camping which I understand is not permitted.

Thanks to Hornsea Sailing Club for hosting the event and to Steve for welcoming the fleet.
