16th - 17th June Burton Sailing Club Burton Sailing Club hosted the Midland Area Championships welcoming twenty boats from all over the country. Day one, with just enough wind in the first race, to enable the front half dozen boats to change positions many times before completion. Geoff Phillips/3812 finished first, followed by Tracy Amos/3692 then Colin Lown/206 Race two, with little or no wind, resulted in only one boat completing, Nick Smith/1161, with the remainder of the fleet out of time. Sunday, and light breezes. With three races to go, and the previous days disasters there was everything to go for. The first race of the day, Nick Smith/1161 again got off to an excellent start, clear of the field, which he held throughout the entire race. Tracy Amos achieving second place, ahead of Wayne Atherton/3383. With winds dropping off later, the O.D. decided to have races four and five back to back. Race four mirrored the results of race three for the front runners, of Smith, Amos and Atherton. With the Championship won, Nick Smith selected not to race, and left the fight for second and third place. A number of boats were deemed over the line at the signal, and had to go round the ends. At the first mark, it was Wayne Atherton/3383. Geoff Phillip/3812 and Tracy Amos/3692, all three boats fighting for the second place. Final positions were Wayne Atherton, Tracy Amos, and Geoff Phillips. With good camping and an excellent BBQ on Saturday night, Burton Sailing Club turned out to be and exceptional choice for the Miracle Midland Championships.
